A physical therapy brand and digital goniometer for measuring joint range of motion. Designed as part of Key Tech’s ID Department initiative to evaluate use cases for current AI platforms in the product development process.

Utilizing an AI Augmented Workflow

Generative AI is no longer on the sidelines - it’s rapidly reshaped the design industry, unlocking new creative possibilities and challenging long-held ways of working.

The Key Tech ID Department carried out an initiative to determine how these tools might best be used within our design processes by researching how they are being used by other firms and conducting a mock project to experiment with several of programs. The general workflow for the mock project is above - a back and forth between designer and AI tool.

Design and Market Research

Opportunity Space

While measuring ROM is standard practice, goniometers are outdated and unintuitive. They require therapists to manually record measurements to later share with patients. Furthermore, the measurements can be complex and hard for patients to understand, leading to confusion.

This mock project sought to design a digital goniometer and the home page of a connected PC app for a new brand in the PT market to improve communication between physician and patients and ensure accurate recording and tracking of progress.

Use Environment & Personas

Images generated by Midjourney

A goniometer is a common instrument used to measure an injured joint’s range of motion (ROM) and track patient progress in physical therapy (PT).

Patient & Provider

ChatGPT and Copilot were used to research the clinical settings, research and educational institutions, and home and remote settings goniometers are currently used in.

Brand Language Development

Copilot, ChatGPT, and Recraft were used to brainstorm brand names and logos. The final, down selected logo was revised and cleaned up outside of AI platforms in Illustrator.

Goni+ Development

Moodboard was created with Midjourney AI based on established brand language.

Final concept was hand sketched then manually modeled in Solidworks. A screenshot of the model was imported into Vizcom to explore CMF options.

GUI Development

Patient home page was created manually in Adobe XD, then input into Vizcom AI to explore options for graphic treatment.

Final color and styling was applied in Adobe XD based on Vizcom output.
